| Seedtime 14th Gods and angels, I feel like I was run over by a carriage this morning! I had some kind of liquor last night, I believe they called it waters of gold. I remember little of the evening, I think I remember holding on to the table in the tavern because the room was pitching like a green horse. Next thing I remember was lying on the poop deck, being violently ill. I'm not sure how I got to my bunk, but some kind soul has deposited me here where I may try to recover from my folly. Uncle Alfred always told me that a gentleman should know how to hold his drink. He would be quite ashamed of me, I fear. Jeck is regarding me curiously. He has seemed tense and skittish today, perhaps the proximity of the Veil? I'm not sure. Seedtime 17th We had a battle this evening with some nasty little sea creatures. I believe the crew called them sahaugins...They were quite strong and did some damage to the crew. There was one in particular, carrying a trident, who seemed to be their leader. I am most grateful to Skellius, who sent the ship skipping across the water at a high rate of speed, and Stephen and Raven, who used light spells to deter the creatures. They, being creatures of darkness, found light most unpleasant...We managed to kill several of them before the ship was out of their range... Seedtime 21st Saw the ship with red sails again...most disturbing! Lark came to me in a dream tonight, and begged me to turn back. She cried and said I never loved her. Most heart wrenching. Luckily, Uncle Max had warned us that the Veil could cause this type of dream, and my lovely Lark's eyes were the blue grey of a winter's sky, not the glowing green that they appeared in the dream. Still, I am shaken, and wonder if I have the courage to face what lies ahead. Seedtime 22nd A marvelous ship came abreast of the Moonwind tonight, like an enormous orchid it was, glowing with an unearthly light. On it's deck, a crew of the dead. It was terrible in it's beauty and it was hard to tear my eyes away. Bless Stephen and Raven for their music. It seemed to lessen the immense melancholy the ship imposed. Seedtime 23rd The veil is a fine grey line from here. The prentices have put a jade bowl in the hands of the mermaid figurehead and filled it with some special water (holy water?). We have been told to go below deck so as not to disrupt the summoning of elementals. I looked out for a moment and saw Paulous chanting and gesturing. We must be through the veil before night falls. Below decks, Nathaniel, Miles and Samuel have prepared a feast for us and the crew. They are singing chanties and celebrating as though we had already passed through the veil. I wish I could share their enthusiasm, but I am still sick at heart over Alfreds murder and my inability to solve it and bring those responsible to justice. Still, I must make an effort to be a part of this group. Jeck doesn't want to come with me, so I guess I'll let him fend for himself this evening. More later... | |
